訳詞にあたって

義兄テリーと彼のような精神薄弱の人間を抱え込む社会をモンタージュした詞はアグレッシヴかつミニマルな美しさをたたえている。推測だがこの詞はソマリア出身の妻イマンに捧げられているのではないだろうか。人種、宗教差別などイマンはモデルとして黒人社会と白人社会の挟間で生きなくてはならず、ボウイは彼女を励ます思いで、義兄を主人公にしてみたのではないだろうか。『Black Tie White Noise』というアルバム全体がイマンへのオマージュなのだから正解も不正解もないだろうが。

筆者が気に入っている箇所はエンディングの♪Got to belive somebody」の節で、結束感強いメッセージは詞全体を前置きにすればこそ高らかに歌えるものであるし、スタジオ・トラックでは鎮魂のサックスがこの部分に重なり世界を広げて見せてくれる。
